Featured cause: Miles of Smiles
Rotary’s Miles of Smiles is a program run by two Richmond Rotary clubs, and it works with the Madison County School District and the county health department to identify children who need dental care but whose families do not have public or private insurance and can’t afford the cost. Every year, the health department provides dental screenings to about 600 Madison County second-graders. Of those they identify, from 150 to 200 need dental intervention. At present, there is no follow-up mechanism to provide care. However, a number of local dentists have agreed to a reduced-fee schedule to treat children referred by the health department. The Miles of Smiles program is designed to help fund treatment at reduced fees so these children can smile without embarrassment and also smile because they are enjoying good oral health.
